About Komaba Elementary

Komaba is a residential area near the heart of Tokyo. Despite its urban location, Komaba enjoys a wealth of culture and nature, including several parks, Japan Folk Crafts Museum, Tokyo International High School,
Tokyo University and a large foreign population including some dormitories for foreign students.
Komaba Elementary School has a long history---we celebrated our 65th anniversary in 1999---and since our foundation we have had more than 6,500 graduates who are now active and successful in diverse fields of our society.
With its legacy and tradition, our eyes are turned to the future. Our goal is to produce students who will be productive citizens of the 21st century with both local and international perspective.

-Educational Goals-

At Komaba Elementary School, we are committed to giving students both a strong academic background and the social skills needed to survive in the real world. Our goals for the students are to foster individuals:

3. who are curious and enjoy learning.

In order to achieve these, our goals as teachers are:

1. to teach respect for others in an environment free of bullying, prejudice and discrimination.
2. to foster cooperation among classmates.

3. to encourage individual expression and achievement.
4. to create a safe, secure environment and to promote good health and a positive self-image.
5. to cultivate good communication skills with an international and a multi-cultural perspective.
6. to work closely with parents and the community.

-Foreign Language Education-

As part of the Ministry of Education pilot program to introduce English at the elementary school level, we started a three-year experimental curriculum in 1994. A permanent program with a full-time native teacher began in 1998.
The program's emphasis is on basic, real world communication skills and an open-minded, international perspective-an awareness of themselves as both Japanese persons and citizens of the 'global village'.
